Upon arrival each day, your child is welcomed by a teacher as he or she is helped out of the car or off the bus. At Talarke, the entire staff knows your child by name. In the classroom, your child is encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and think for him or herself, all in English. Your child may even have a class outside where exploration is encouraged.
At snack time, your child eats some fresh fruit. Lunch is a healthy meal. After snack and lunch, plenty of time is given for supervised free play with friends.
Your child does practice exercises related to what’s been learned at school and gets help from teachers. If any mistakes are made on exercise pages, the opportunity to correct them is given in order to learn from those mistakes. If homework is given, it is short and your child is prepared to do it with little or no assistance. Your child will be tested on topics learned as needed. If your child has a test, it’s not likely that he or she will have another during the same week.
Notice What Wasn’t in This Picture
Your child didn’t sit and copy the board all day, listen to the English teacher speak Spanish, or have a snack or lunch made up of sweets, junk food, and sweetened drinks. Your child wasn’t given piles of homework for Mom or Dad to teach, and didn’t have to memorize a lot for a test. She or he also didn’t experience a week of tests in every subject with loads of material to memorize (and quickly forget).
